En ce mois de juillet 2021, la moisson a commencé vraiment très en retard par rapport aux autres année. Généralement, début juillet les récoltes ont déjà commencé depuis une ou deux semaines. Quand je suis venu vers le 14 juillet, Raphaël et Sébastien n'avaient pas encore pu vraiment commencer leur travail. A chaque fois qu'il pleut, recommence le même processus contraignant : tester l'humidité du blé pour savoir s'il est prêt à être coupé ou non. Il faut attendre systématiquement une demi journée après chaque averse pour pouvoir effectuer ce test. Ce qui rend la moisson très fastidieuse en cas de temps capricieux comme cette année.
In this month of July 2021, the harvest really started very late compared to other years. Usually, at the beginning of July, the harvests have already started a week or two ago. When I came around July 14, Raphaël and Sébastien had not yet been able to really start their work. Every time it's raining, the same binding process restarts : test the grain's humidity to see if it is ready to be cut or not. You must always wait half a day after each downpour to be able to perform this test. This makes the harvest very tedious in case of capricious weather like this year.
Le constat évident de ce séjour, c'est que l'année 2021 fut particulièrement mauvaise en terme de récolte céréalière. Ceci est du principalement à la mauvaise météo, qui a finalement décalé tout le calendrier des moissons. J'écris ces lignes début 2022 et il sera intéressant de voir comment va se comporter la météo cette année. Par comparaison, il y a eu de fortes chaleurs en 2020 et la récolte était déjà finie le 14 juillet.
On peut se dire que si le phénomène est commun à plusieurs régions agricoles, cela aura un impact sur la production globale et donc sur les prix.
The obvious observation of this trip is that the year 2021 was particularly bad in terms of cereal harvest. This is mainly due to the bad weather, which finally shifted the entire harvest schedule. I am writing these lines in early 2022 and it will be interesting to see how the weather will behave this year. By comparison, there was canicule in 2020 and the harvest was already over on July 14.We can say that if the phenomenon is common to several agricultural regions, it will have an impact on overall production and therefore on prices.
J'ai un peu discuté des pesticides et des produits chimiques même si ce n'était pas le sujet de mon séjour. Il y a eu énormément d'efforts et de transformations faites à ce niveau pendant les dernières décennies. Du point de vue des agriculteurs que j'ai pu rencontrer, les produits sont maintenant utilisés d'une façon bien plus raisonnée qu'il y a 20 ans et restent indispensables pour maintenir le rendement imposé par notre mode de consommation. Pour beaucoup d'entre eux, c'est plus un problème systémique de production que de considération morale.
I chatted a bit about pesticides and chemicals even if that wasn't the subject of my stay. There has been many efforts and transformations made on this subject over the past decades. From farmers i met's point of view, these chemicals are now used in a more reasoned way than 20 years ago, and stay essentials to maintain the yield imposed by our consumption mode. For many of them, it's more a systemic problem of production than a moral consideration.
